In addition to that key feature (which is obviously impossible with non-mobile social networks), you also get all of “expected” functions: mapping, photo/video sharing, online interactions, etc. It got a nice review from Apple itself, so go get ZKout right now. As a developer I had been hoping Apple would release a developer kit with 1.1.3 but that didn’t happen. I spend all day writing web applications so really the last thing I want to do on my free time is write another one when I could learn how to write a standalone. Who knows though, maybe one day the iPhone will run on Android…

Practically every non-web iPhone app requires you to have jailbroken your iPhone. I’ve gotten some questions about it so I’m going to take today’s entry to tell you about jail breaking your iPhone. Essentially what jail break does is decimate all the OS security settings. Suddenly you go from being locked out to changing things to being able to treat your iPhone more like a personal computer–you can get rid of the Stocks option you never use or add a button for Contacts instead of having to go through the Phone section to get it. It’s remarkably easy to do and you can do it here.

The application also allows you to delete individual messages from the iPhone (a feature missing from the built in SMS application). The best part? It works over your data connection so archiving messages is free. You can’t beat an app that both does something useful and is free can you?

You do need to have your phone jailbroken though (plus a treasuremytext account [also free]).

The basic premise is that you have essentially a big voice mail center that you can call and leave reminders for yourself. I have been waiting patiently for Apple to build one of these into the iPhone itself but in the mean time you should probably check out ReQall if you’re as forgetful as I am.

I’m a jaded internet user. Because I spend all day programming there are few things that make me smile and even fewer that make me laugh. PLIBA’s name gave me a good laugh when I saw what it stood for. Maybe not inherently funny, I have certainly said “please let it be available” countless times while trying to book last-minute things. Granted I have inserted an extra consonant in between the B and the A (if you know what I’m saying, and I think you do). Anyway, PLIBA is a booking engine that’s definitely worth a bookmark if you’re a traveler and even more worth a bookmark if you’re not–because you’re probably going to be more desperate to find something.

What exactly is an iPhone app? Think back in time–way back. Let’s go back to when this site was started in July of 2006 or when I took it over a few months later. This was a time before there was Jailbreak or the much-hyped iPhone carrier hack. There were no iPhone applications in the truest sense except for what Apple threw on there. The “applications” people built were essentially specialized sites built to work with the iPhone and have the look and feel of a traditional non-web application. Now that the first thing people do when they get their iPhone is Jailbreak it, you can now actually write full-blown apps for it. Most of these reviews are based on user submissions and if people would submit these stand-alone apps I’d be happy to review them.

I just wanted to hit that topic since I got a comment about it (and the commenter was totally right in asserting these were not true “apps”).

As you know I try to stay away from games on here but since I’ve taken such a long break from writing at all I thought I’d ease my way back in my reviewing a very, very addictive game, Colour Match. Now, don’t get me wrong, it’s aggravating to play this game–not because of the concept or programming; both are great. It’s aggravating because you’re just simply wrong a lot of the time. The goal is, using the three colors, to “build” the target color. The challenge lies in that you don’t immediately understand that green, blue and red are capable of giving you a bright yellow. Yet they are. If you want to kill some time on a really addictive game, do it with Colour Match.
