iEightBall for the iPhone
In the spirit of unusual-but-clever theme, today’s entry is the iEightBall. I think like most people who grew up in the 1980s, I relied on my magic eight ball for all my important decisions–study/don’t study, ask so-and-so to prom/ask so-and-so’s hotter friend. My standard magic eight ball died about 15 years later and although I appreciated it returning several ambiguous answers at once, I think it has been safely replaced by this iPhone application. Just like its namesake, you just have to rotate your iPhone a few times and viola, your answer. Now let’s see, go to work or call in sick…

iPhone Ovulation Calculator
I thought I had seen every type of iPhone application by this point but I was wrong. Submitted by Joel, this ovulation calendar takes the date of your/your ladyfriend’s last period and calculates the ovulation cycle–including the likelyhood of conceiving a boy or girl depending on the day. Ah, these modern times in which we live. Get the iPhone Ovulation Calendar now.

Heysan: AIM, MSN and ICQ

Heysan for the iPhone
Heysan is one of several iPhone chat/messaging applications. With GoogleTalk and Yahoo still in development, this app will still reliably relay your chats in AIM, MSN and ICQ (people still use ICQ?). It’s not terribly feature-rich but it doesn’t really need to be–the ease of use is great and you can flip between different chat programs relatively smoothly. I’m not sure if it’s a must-have but it’s certainly worth a look if you don’t already have a communications program for your iPhone yet.

iEventful for the iPhone
iEventful, written by John Tantalo, runs of the Eventful API. From the front-end, you simply input the city you live and iEventful will pull in and sort any exciting (or non-exciting in my case) activities. Drilling down, the final screens contain basic locations, details and times of the event. I think this app would work well if you were in a new city looking for something off the beaten path–I certainly found things on here that despite living here for the past seven years, I didn’t know about. That said, the app is a little pokey because of the feed but it merited a bookmark from me.

MLB scores for the iPhone
I’m probably a bigger baseball addict than most people, so I’m doubly pleased to report on MLB Mobile. Even though you can easily hit a number of sites to find the score of a particular game, you unfortunately sift through several pages to get there. MLB mobile takes you straight to the scores in a simple, quick-loading display. As an added bonus, the screenshot even has my beloved Chicago Cubs as the day’s winner. It’s a must-have for any baseball fan.

iRovr for the iPhone
Among the users standing in line waiting for the iPhone, very likely many of the poor huddled line holders and standers around were thinking of the social networking sites they may have left behind in the search for the best seat in line for the iPhone. Among the list of features for the iPhone, socialization and networking sites were not included form launch, so a third party developer has included iRovr, an iPhone specific social media tool, similar to MySpace and Facebook, that allows users to upload pictures and profiles and communicate with each other through instant messaging and other private messengers. Downloading and installing iRovr is a simple matter and users can be interacting with other users instantly upon the successful installation of the software from irovr.com.

iBudge for the iPhone

The iPhone is considered by many to be a revolutionary device in the hand held world, providing a phone, mp3 player and web communications device in one easy to use, extremely sleek package. But some dissenters continue to argue that the iPhone lacks software that is essential to it’s functionality as a hand held device, mainly PDA software. Third part software programmers have solved this challenge by providing software applications such as iBudge, the budget calculator for the iPhone. Using the iBudge software is a snap and is very useful for keeping track of the money spent by users on a day to day basis as it is intended to do. iBudge does and admirable job of simulating some of the PDA’s versatility on the iPhone, and can be downloaded for free at MyBudge.com.

Joe Hewitt has released everyone’s favorite debugging tool Firebug, in an iPhone-friendly way. There are complete instructions for installation and use from his site. Casual users will truly have no need for this but developers already accustomed to debugging with Firebug installing this puppy should be a no-brainer.

goMovies for the iPhone
Built off the Fandango API, goMovies does exactly what you probably think it does: return showtimes and locations for movies. The input is a breeze–pop in your zip code and let it do the work. I would have thought by now there would a ton of these sites, as they’re relatively easy to make, but apparently goMovies is such a winner no one developed an also-ran yet. Check out goMovies now.

FindIt for iPhone
Infospace’s FindIt! is a scaled-down search engine for use primarily on the iPhone. Because of the substantial narrowing tabs, it acts more of a hybrid between a directory and a search engine, which definitely helps you get around it more efficiently than Google’s mobile offering. Additionally, the tabs are very helpful so you don’t have to go clunking around typing any more than you have to. Definitely should be in the running for your iPhone’s search engine.
